Blog from the Web Manager’s Desktop – Edition 13
What
is a ‘Blog’?! - Previous Blogs
Hi all
Well May
and June went past in a flash, but we’ve made good progress in two of our three
major projects, as follows:
V/Line Inform
There’s
been a heap of testing done with Inform since my last update. Sending tailored
messages to customers who get on and off the same train at different times and
places has been a challenge. But, with the exception of a few final little
gremlins, we’re there!
Since Mon
30 June, we’ve been sending ‘real’ (not test) messages to registered users during
the morning and afternoon peaks (Mon-Fri). All in all, this has gone well.
From Mon
13 July until the official launch, we will be covering the PM peak only (as I’m
currently the only person who can send you messages!) The past two weeks have
shown that the afternoon is when we experience more disruptions, so that’s when
I’ll be on hand to keep you informed.
So, pretty
much everything works in the test environment - now comes the ‘transition to
live’. This is when we move the system from the test server to the production
(‘live’) environment. In layman’s terms, when we move from the slower, less
reliable equipment to the faster, robust equipment!
The
transition is taking longer than anticipated. We’re in the middle of another
full round of testing before the system is certified as “ready”. At this stage
we’re hoping to officially launch later in July.
Once the
official launch happens, we’ll be ‘handing the keys’ over to our Operations
team, who will keep you up-to-date seven days a week from first service to
last.
Join Inform
If you haven’t
done so already, we’re still offering pre-registration for Inform. This means
you will receive any messages we send, even though we don’t quite have 100%
coverage just yet.

Online Ticket Sales
We’ve
launched this product to Beta testing. We’ve had some great
feedback, which we’ll use to improve the system before it goes live. We’re
hoping that this will be in a few weeks too!
If
you’d like to join the Beta testing team please see Website Beta Volunteers.
Viclink Journey Planner
Integration
This work
has been put on hold to let us focus on Inform and Online Ticket Sales. As
soon as these systems are in place, we’ll go straight back to work on this
integration.
We’re
continuing to work with Metlink on the integration of the Viclink Journey
Planner on our website. Reminder: Viclink Journey Planner (new window)
allows to you search all public transport options across Victoria.
As always…
Your feedback is welcome on any aspect of the V/Line
website.
Kind
regards
